The Smarter Kid Rules: How to Get Better Grades in School

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Do you want to get better grades? I m about to share with you some of the rules that smart kids follow, whether they know it or not.

These rules have been a closely guarded secret for years, but as a former smarter kid, I think it is time to expose them to you and the world. Getting good grades is not hard…if you follow these rules:

1. Sit in the front of the class. Sitting in the front of the class makes it easier to pay attention to what the teacher is saying. Plus, you might get a better grade just because the teacher knows your face better than someone who is goofing off in the back of the class.

2. Ask and answer questions in class. If you don t understand something the teacher is saying, ask him/her to explain it. It isn t stupid to ask questions it is stupid to pretend to understand something that you don t.

3. Hang out with smarter kids. Always hang out with people who have already achieved what you want to get. Make friends with students who are already achieving good grades in the class you are having trouble with. If you don t understand the way the teacher explains it, then ask a student who understands to explain it to you.

4. Write down everything the teacher writes on the blackboard. When a teacher writes something on the blackboard, they think it is important. What a teacher thinks is important is usually what ends up on the test. Also be sure to write down all other important-sounding stuff the teacher says.

5. Read over your class notes just before you go to bed each night. The brain is most open to suggestion just before you go to bed and right after you wake up in the morning. If you review the notes you took that day just before going to bed, your brain will soak in the information better and it will help you remember what you learned.

6. Develop a “Do it now” attitude towards homework and study. Do your homework right after school, while the information is fresh in your mind. The longer you wait, the harder it is going to be.

Every 15 minutes, take a 5-minute break to recharge. Run in place, lift some weights, or do some push-ups. Homework exercises your mind use your breaks to exercise your body. It will make homework more fun too.

7. Ask the teacher for help now rather than later. If you find yourself falling behind, go to the teacher after class and ask him/her to work with you on the parts you don t understand. They will admire you for having the courage to ask for help. Teachers aren t out to get you. Most of them want to do a good job, and it makes them feel good when students want to learn.

8. Read the end of the chapter first answer the easy questions first on tests. When you read, always go to the end of the chapter and see if there is a chapter summary or questions/answers. Read those first, then go back to the beginning. This will help you understand what you read better.

When you take a test, never just start at the beginning. Always read the whole thing so that you can pick out the easy questions. Do those first. That will give you confidence. Next, do the questions for which you think you can work out the answers. Save the hardest questions for last.

9. Study a little bit every day. The brain learns best if you give it smaller pieces of information every day instead of trying to cram in large chunks of information at the last minute. If you cram, you will get brain cramp. Studying every day for short periods is why smarter kids are smarter. If a smarter kid tells you that he/she doesn t have to study at all, it is a lie.

10. Becoming a smarter kid will make you a smarter person. Doing your best in school will teach you to think better and become a better problem solver. This will help you get a better job, make more money, become a better partner, and become a better parent to your own children.

God put you on earth because He needed you here. He created you so that you can make a difference.

Smarter kid = smarter person = smarter choices = better life

9 Questions to Ask Before You Build an In-Ground Swimming Pool

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

1) Are you willing to devote time regularly to maintain your pool since an in-ground swimming pool is a high maintenance item? Please be aware that, if you are planning to sell your home one day, for some buyers an in-ground swimming pool is not an asset but actually a liability due to its high-maintenance nature.

2) Do you have or are you willing to have a high fence all around your pool, complete with a locked gate?

3) Are you willing to change your pump and filter at least once in every 15 years?

4) Are you ready for the possibility that you may have to change your underground circulation pipes and skimmers perhaps once in every 15 years?

5) Are you willing to devote a regular part of your budget for the amazing variety of chemicals that your pool will need regularly to keep it sparkling clean?

6) Are you willing to vacuum the bottom of your pool on a regular basis (perhaps once a month) when your pool is in use?

7) Are you willing to spend around $1,000 to buy a good spring-lock pool cover for winter which allows the rain and snow water seep through but keeps the debris out?

8) If you live in a wooded area, are you willing to clean your pool off the rodents, garden snakes and other animals that will eventually find their way into your pool?

9) Are you willing to take the necessary legal precautions (like obtaining a written release form from the parents of your children’s friends) to protect yourself against the various accidents that can and do occur in and around swimming pools?

Dealing With Business Debt

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Most businesses encounter business debt while they try to reach their business goals. Financial needs during start up or expansion of a company, the constant need to soar ahead of competitors and other reasons could lead to business debt. However, when dealt with effectively, companies could get rid of business debt in the shortest possible time.

Excessive borrowing could lead to business debts which might result in a number of problems including:

•Inability to deal with costs

•Reduced product quality

•Reduced value of business

•Declining confidence among stakeholders

There are many options to help deal with business debts depending on the needs and circumstances encountered by the entrepreneur. CVA (Company Voluntary Agreement) allows a debt ridden company to enter into a formal agreement with creditors and allows creditors to be repaid an agreed amount over a period of time. The proposal must be agreed upon by a minimum of 75% of the creditors. A similar option for sole traders is an IVA. It is a legally binding business debt solution which needs to be set up by a licensed Insolvency Practitioner. An IVA can wipe off up to 90% of debt, offer affordable repayment options and put an end to creditor harassment. Bankruptcy is believed to be the last resort to deal with bad business debts. It is important to seek specialist advice before filing for bankruptcy. Specialist advisors are trained to analyze finances and will be able to guide debtors to deal with their business debt in the best possible manner. The internet has opened up a world of options for those who are troubled by business debt. One can find extensive information about various options and also source the best debt consolidation and debt management deals with a simple click of a mouse.

Hot or Not — Prom Trends for 2004

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Prom: it s loaded with expectations. For some, it s merely a dance. For others, it means that first great step into adulthood, while savoring one s position at the top of the grammar-school food chain. And for some, it means a night of pure Cinderella magic. Combine all this with a youth-oriented culture, and you have an event that demands a serious fashion plan.

So what fashion forces are driving Prom 2004? The answers are: curves, glamour and loads of color.

“Prom 2004″ is actually a bit of a misnomer, as most dresses tend to follow Fall 2003 styles. This make sense: prom dresses are high-ticket items, and retailers need a chance to test out trends in the shopping malls. (Hair is more adaptable, so prom hair is more attuned to the present).

As for fashion in general, it s still reeling from the ultimate anti-fashion incident: the 9/11 attack. You may recall that the industry stopped in its tracks. Major fashion shows were cancelled, or scaled down to a roomful of attendees on folding chairs. “Can fashion still matter?” was the question no one could ignore.

But of course, fashion didn t die. As always, it reflected the newly-altered world view. “World views” contain many interlocking strands, as does fashion, but strong themes emerged and are still in play. Here are some of the best-articulated trends in Prom 2004:

// The Solidarity Uniform

Dressy, formal looks from the 30s and 60s. Think Hollywood glamour, and Jacquie Kennedy. Beneath this trend is the new focus on attending family events and dressing up for them.

Expressing the 30s are the curvy, Screen Siren prom gowns: smoky mermaids in luxurious ruched satin, and Latin-style ruffles and trains.

Reviving the 60s are Grace Kelly/Jacquie-O A-line skirts, sometimes tea-length, with crinoline slips. These classic beauties are updated with simpler, more natural hair and makeup, not to mention some mod-style colors (bold black and white, bright red, or submarine yellow). Gloves and a small shiny pocketbook are must-haves, but for 2004, you don t have to stick to ordinary colors!

Timeless prom queen gowns are fully *au courant* as well — no amount of beading, boning, crinoline or shine is over-the-top, so enjoy the license for glamour. Perhaps this is the right year to indulge in a delicate tiara!

You ll be surprised by the number of strapless gowns on offer. Every one of these “solidarity” gowns lend themselves to classic strapless glamour.

// The Eastern Bloc

Fashion influence is drifting, and the East is gaining ground: Londoners do their best to dress like Persians, and Bollywood antics make the global radar more often. You ll see the lovely outcome in those 2004 prom offerings with an elegant sari look and extraordinary hand beading.

// Sporty Spice

J. Lo lives on in the sporty side of Prom 2004, where two-piece gowns (some midriff-bearing) continue to make a splash. This look is not only fresh but practical those beautiful bodices can be paired with jeans long after prom night s become a matchbook and a memory. “Sporty-prom” fashionistas can augment their costume with sparkling navel gems and exotic paint-on body tattoos.

// Celebrity Fashion

Can it go any lower? The prom world s not immune from red carpet antics, and several sultry 2004 offerings call for double-sided tape. This year s necklines sometimes plunge so far that there s nowhere else to go look for backdrift to follow (no pun intended) in the next few years.

// In Truth, 2004

The dresses genuinely in sync with 2004 runways are the ultra-feminine pastels, with delicate ruffles. Think “prom dress meets the park.” Don t be afraid to go with soft green, coral and pink paeons to girlhood, simply because most offerings are jewel-toned and sizzlingly seductive.

// Hair

Soft, shiny waves are new for spring (think lovely Charlize Theron at the Golden Globes) Aniston-straight is out. Whatever you do, don t torture your hair into some unnatural confection it s simplicity and naturalness that updates these retrospective looks.

// Shoes

Clunky is dead. Open-toed stilettos are red-hot. Sure, the gorgeous silver (or transparent) sky-high creations on the market are the ultimate in impracticality. The romantic prom-goer will buy them anyway, get a great pedicure, and slip them off halfway through the night for a best of both worlds (if not best for the pocketbook ) experience.

// Jewelry and Makeup

With all those strapless fashions, take care not to over-accessorize. Unless you re going for a vintage look, don t spoil that beautiful expanse of clavicle with a necklace don sparkly, dangling earrings instead to create a long line. If the Nicole Kidman look is more to your taste, consider one of those retro multi-strand chokers (in black, of course), or a slim black ribbon paired with a silk rose. Chandelier earrings might be “outre” at the Oscars, but they re definitely not a done deal at

Prom 2004.

Streams Of Income: The Day Of Doing One Job Well Is Over

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

The day of being a one-trick pony is over. I think that has been the point of this season in my life. I was raised to get good grades, go to college and get a good-paying job. And for 40 something years, I’ve remained in that mindset–putting all my energies into one thing.

Newly separated, I started looking around for what I owned or what skills I had that could stabilize me financially. One, I knew I could use my musical talents. So I put the word out that I was looking to play keyboard for a church. Before long, I entered a subcontractor relationship with a local church ministry. Two, I knew that I was good at typing, desktop publishing, and bookkeeping. Before long, I was producing monthly newsletters. It caught on and others started utilizing my services. In one month, I brought in $3000.

Things were going well at first. What I didn’t understand, however, is wells dry up. Tending to focus on one thing at a time, I was caught off guard when as quickly as the money started to flow, it stopped.

Streams of income have to be primed like wells. You have to get one well working, move to another and another, all the while, keeping a watchful eye on all of them. It reminds me of the juggler who spins plates on a pole. He’s got to spin one and then another, but keep them all spinning. It takes lots of work!

As all my spinning plates crashed to the floor, I felt the answer was finding stable employment. Therefore, I accepted a full time opening with the outpatient substance abuse agency where I was then working part-time as a counselor assistant. Exemplary performance led to an offer to run on office on my own. I accepted the offer. Initially, I felt great. The headquarters office was so chaotic: phones ringing, doors opening and closing, people constantly in each others’ way. It was a relief to be away from all that. At least, at first.

Sometimes revelation can be terrifying. Your wise self knows that something is not for you or that something has served its purpose and it’s time to move on but the timing couldn’t be worse. Fearing uncertainty, I tried to talk myself into the benefits of remaining at my job. I told myself that I was making almost as much money as I was making working with my ex. I told myself that I had a child to feed. I told myself that I was now 46 years old and did not have the luxury of irresponsibility. Despite my valiant arguments, my heart refused to listen.

I had to leave, but I had nothing else.

What I learned during that time would change my life forever and it’s this: do not underestimate the human spirit. It is relentless. If trapped in a prison with no foreseeable escape, the human spirit takes anything–a popsicle stick, an old spoon–and begins digging its way out.

As faith would have it, I had already begun a home study life coaching course and was almost done. I took a chance and gave a one month notice to my employer. In the weeks counting down to my last day of employment, I secured a piano-playing job with a local church. Within the pages of my coaching materials were some ideas on how to market my coaching business. My interest was sparked most by E-publishing. I began to contribute content to the directory thereby coaching hundreds of readers. Before long, I located an online publisher who would pay for my articles. I got my first payment within 5 days of submitting.

Today, I have a job interview with a temporary agency. Sound familiar? Don’t be fooled. I’ve shed that stinkin thinkin, that one-trick pony mentality. I don’t plan to vacate my other streams for one job. This time, I have my music income primed and producing. I have an online paying source for my articles primed and producing. Once I get a job, I’ll have three active streams of income. I’ll be doing what I enjoy doing, yet having the money in order to do it.

First Time On The Job? Top Ten Workplace Tips For Teens

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

Whether you are new to the workplace or still looking for the right place to start, here are a few things to keep in mind to make your first working experience a successful one.

- You show a great deal about who you are in your approach to your work. Demonstrate that you respect yourself enough to honor your commitment to your job. Be willing to give your best and be happy to be useful.

- Be courteous. Are you pleasant to work with? Are your co-workers happy to spend time with you? Look carefully at your behavior. Employers want employees who can get along with everyone and are pleasant to be around. Never put people down or engage in mean gossip, or allow others to gossip to you. Keep both your promises and your confidences.

- Make sure you are never late. Being late must never be more than a rare occurrence. Show that you are both dependable and responsible.

- Truly make it a habit to think before you speak. Communicate as clearly as you can and always speak with respect.

- Being a good listener is a skill that few fail to appreciate. This skill alone will help you immensely and when coupled with not interrupting others, will greatly contribute to your on-the-job success.

- Make sure to dress appropriately. Overly suggestive clothes are not for the workplace. Dress the way the person responsible for your promotions expects you to dress.

- You may find that now is a good time to change how you manage your time. Work on developing the habit of planning ahead for instance, make sure your work clothes are clean and that you have gas in your car well ahead of time. You may want to start a few new routines such as using a daily planner. Take the necessary actions to remain organized and to adjust to your new responsibilities.

- Approach every job challenge and difficult situation as an opportunity to increase both your workplace and your interpersonal skills.

- Whatever your job, remember that there is dignity in work, and great satisfaction can be gained from knowing you do your particular job well and give your best.

- Don t forget that the contacts you make during your first job may turn out to be life changing and affect the course of future events. For instance, leaving a lasting good impression with your employer may go a long way. You may need another job in the future or a strong personal reference for college or for a better job!

The Relation Between Debt Consolidation and Your Credit Score

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

As a matter of fact, the rising credit card debt does not only bring financial worries for you, but it also damages your credit score. In this scenario, you find it very difficult to repay the debt, let alone rebuilding your credit score. This is where debt consolidation brings great relief for you. It does not only shows you the ways to repay your debts on easy terms, but it also helps you build your credit score.

Debt Consolidation lower your Debts to income ratio

If you are consistent in making the consolidated monthly payment to the debt consolidation company, it rapidly reduces your debts to income ratio, and thus raises your credit score simultaneously.

What is Debt to income ratio?

Your debt-to-income ratio determines your financial stability. It is very simple to calculate this ratio. All you have to do is to divide the consolidated monthly payment to the debt consolidation company by your current monthly gross income. This clearly indicates that the lower your debt-to-income ratio, the better you can handle your debts.

Things That You Should Not Do

Once you have borrowed a debt consolidation loan, you must not take any further loan from anywhere else. Moreover, never stop paying the consolidated monthly payment to the debt consolidation company. Make the payment in time and always be consistent in that. If you do not take care of these things, your purpose of borrowing the debt consolidation will remain unfulfilled. Rather, you will be drowned in deeper debts than you had been ever before.

Overall, debt consolidation services offered by various debt consolidation companies have something for everybody. Irrespective of the nature and amount of your debt, if you prudently choose a right debt consolidation service, it will not only relieve you from the burden of debts, but also will rebuild and maintain your credit score.

What Are Boot Camps?

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads, for your redemption draweth nigh.
- The Holy Bible

When people commit crime, a punishment is only sensible when it offers them a chance of atonement. Although society makes the mistake of branding people as evil forever, it cannot afford to keep its citizens away from freedom by keeping them in prison and denying them any measure of reformation. Life is all about second chances and the legal system is in no way exempt from this.

Seeing redemption as the goal, the legal system invented few methods that are centered on reforming delinquents, especially those brought up to the juvenile justice system. The most recognize and criticized among them are the boot camps. Boot camps are private or government-owned correctional facilities where people are sent in the hope that they will mend their erroneous ways. A boot camp sentence is passed as an option to a longer prison term especially for first time offenders and juvenile delinquents. The term can run up to a maximum of six months, although different states have different regulations for this. A boot camp is designed with the basic concept of military training camps, with a lot of emphasis on physical labor. The concept of guilt is maximized with psychological tools such as humiliation, degrading rhetoric and building a fear for authority. These are intended to make the inmate submissive enough to keep them away from crime. At times, such techniques can seem brutal and totalitarian. There is a fine line between making people respect authority and breaking their spirit with extreme discipline and this should be respected in any correctional facility.

Boots camps were first introduced in the states of Georgia and Oklahoma and have become an enduring feature of United States justice. In the United States, depending on the court sentence, even a sentence of ten years can be exchanged for three months in a boot camp. Moreover, once juveniles have been sentenced with a term in a boot camp, their only way out of it is to go to jail. In recent years, boot camps have evolved and now most provide educational and recreational facilities along with vocational training and counseling. Special arrangements are also made for the rehabilitation of substance abusers.

Debt Management – Take Control of Your Finances at Earliest

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

In these days of increasing tendency towards spending money at the first opportunity because of consumerism, to incur debts is no longer seen as a sin. Instead debts are taken as a normal financial happening in one’s life and therefore the emphasis is now on debt management. Through adopting ways of debt management, one can keep debts at manageable level and from there can even eliminate them.

Debt management is a way for effectively controlling your spending habits. Also it involves some technique for eliminating debts for ever so that you start all again learning from mistakes.

You must come to conclusion as to why you are under heavy debts? You will find that your uncontrolled spending habits have landed you in trouble. See what is responsible for the spending spree? In most of the cases credit cards are the culprits. Credit cards allow you to buy now and pay later facility. This means you do not think twice before spending. But ultimately you have to pay for what was bought. If there is late payment on buying through credit card, you have to fork out high penalties to the credit card company. There is already a very high interest rate that you are paying on credit cards. It is advisable to cut numbers of credit cards in use for controlling spending habits. Instead use debit card as this way you only spend up to the amount you have in your account.

For effective debt management, make a budget so that you beforehand know where you stand financially. You can even take help of experts in making budget so that you do not deprive your self of necessary spending. Once you have finalized the budget, stick to it for long term results.

In case you have incurred huge debts, then it would be advisable to eliminate them immediately as these debts were of higher interest rate. You should take a debt consolidation loan at lower interest rate and through the loan pay off all previous debts. Thus you would be saving lot of money that was going waste on paying higher interest. Instead of paying installments to different lenders you now pay installments to only one lender to save money and time. This way your credit score also improves dramatically as clearance of previous debts is recorded in your credit report. Improved credit score enables you in taking loans in future at lower interest rates.

There are numerous debt management companies who provide debt management services. They play advisory and active role in debt management. Search them on internet and compare their services and pick up one of them for effective debt management.

Debt management surely plays a deciding role in controlling and eliminating debts. You should plan a budget and stick to it. Better reduce numbers of credit cards for controlling spending habits. Take a debt consolidation loan at lower interest rate for clearing higher interest rate debts.

The True Story of the Puggle

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

HISTORY OF THE PUGGLE

The Puggle is not a hybrid dog. It is not a baby Echidna or a baby Platypus which are both monotremes from Australia.

1970 s
The Puggle character has been around since the mid 1970 s. It is a toy character from The Lost Forests. Puggle is a registered trademark owned by The Lost Forests group in Australia.
www.thelostforests.com.au

DOGS
Puggles are a relatively new type of hybrid dog breed the first puggles ever bred were in 2000 by a breeder named Wallace Havens, owner and operator of Puppy Haven Kennels in Kingston, Wisconsin. The puggle is not purebred it is a cross of a purebred Beagle mother and a purebred Pug father. The hybrid puggle is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid club.

BABY PLATYPUS AND ECHIDNA
Information from the Australian Platypus Conservatory about the Puggle
Dr Shaw, in his scientific description of 1799, gave the name Platypus anatinus, from Greek and Latin words meaning “flat-footed, duck-like”. However, when it became known that Platypus had already been used to name a group of beetles, a new term had to be adopted. The official scientific name became and remains Ornithorhynchus anatinus, with the first word meaning “bird-like snout”.

Although the name “duckbill” was widely used as a popular description for the animal, the abandoned scientific name “platypus” gradually became the accepted common name for the species.

The preferred plural of platypus is either “platypus” or “platypuses”, depending on which dictionary you consult. (We use the former for the sake of simplicity.) The term “platypi” is no longer considered to be valid.

There is no accepted term – equivalent to pup or cub – to describe a baby platypus. One possible name recently suggested is a “platypup”.

In recent years, the inappropriate word “puggles” for baby platypus has been commonly used. This term was applied to baby echidnas some years ago because of their resemblance to Puggles, an American soft-toy character. (It is understood that the toy company concerned may have considered legal action to protect its registered trade-mark in relation to unauthorised usage). For some reason, this name is now being applied to baby platypus. This is both ill-informed (baby platypus and echidnas don t look very much alike, once they get past the initial post-hatching “jelly-bean” stage, and so baby platypus don t much resemble Puggles) and possibly illegal. www.thelostforests.com.au

ABORIGINE LEGEND
According to Aboriginal legend, the first platypus was born after a young female duck mated with a lonely and persuasive water-rat. The duck s offspring had their mother s bill and webbed feet and their father s four legs and handsome brown fur.

The real (true) story of the Puggle from The Lost Forests

Once upon a time there were four million, three thousand, two hundred and one … Puggles, but now there are only a few bagfuls left, just like this one. Puggles lived in the Australian bush under the ground in tunnels. They came out of their holes at night to feed on their favourite tucker, split peas! All night long they would Puggle up every pea they could find, and as daylight approached, it would “dawn” on them that they had to get back home.

Waiting for them at their front doors would be the local people, (which is why they were called “early settlers”). Of course the Puggles had stuffed themselves so full of split peas that they couldn t get down their holes and became stuck with their bottoms at the top, making them easy prey for the people who just loved Puggle pie.

So that is why, last thing at night, tie it up tightly and don t let it out until the morning. This way the Puggles will not become extinct and maybe one day there will be as many Puggles as before …

Now wouldn t that be an eye Puggling sight!
