8 Personal Banking Don’ts

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Presumably the object of having a bank account is to save you money, or at least to help you more easily and properly manage it. But there are also several ways in which your use (or misuse, as the case may be) of your personal banking account could lose you money. Below you’ll find out how to avoid the eight most common blunders when it comes to personal banking.

1. DON’T pay more than you have to: If you’re like most people, you haven’t really made the effort to comparison shop for the best personal banking terms you can find. Most bank accounts have some sort of fees or another associated with certain aspects of utilizing and/or maintaining your account, from annual fees to check-writing fees to fees for falling below a minimum balance to so-called “overdraft protection fees” to counter fees (to name just a few). These fees can slowly eat away at your savings. Banks change their policies all the time, so it’s never a waste of time to look around and make sure that you really are getting the best deal for your money.

2. DON’T ignore your bank statements: When your bank statement arrives in the mail, do you simply toss it without even reading it? Many people do. But bank statements often contain errors, and the only way you’ll know when one occurs is if you read through each statement carefully and compare it against what you know to be true (hopefully by way of a regularly balanced checkbook). Without reviewing your statements, you could wind up stuck with a fee for a payment you didn’t make. You could find that someone has copied your ATM/debit card and made purchases against your account. The only way to catch this is to take it upon yourself to read your statements and check them for accuracy.

3. DON’T be careless with ATMs: Be conscious of other people around you when using an ATM. Do not write your PIN number anywhere near your ATM card and be sure to shield it as you type it in. If you make a mistake writing out a slip, don’t just throw it away or leave it lying there – pocket it and dispose of it properly later. If you request a receipt make sure you take it. And many machines automatically spit out a receipt after a transaction is completed whether you request it or not. Be alert to this happening and make sure to grab that receipt before you walk away.

4. DON’T leave paper lying around: After you’re finished reviewing your bank statements, don’t just carelessly leave them lying out where anyone can see – or steal – them. Even simply throwing your statements away can lead to identity theft. Digging through trash is one of the primary ways identity thieves get the goods on their victims. Don’t make yourself an open target. Lock away any bank statements or other related documents that you wish to hold on to. Invest in an expensive shredder – the confetti type are best – for the ones you don’t. And then remember to use your locked file cabinet and shredder diligently whenever you are through with your bank statements. It’s for your protection.

5. DON’T bank online in a public place: Forget about people looking over your shoulder for a moment. An even bigger threat in banking online at a library or a cyber-café or other WIFI hotspot is another computer user on the same internet connection being able to snoop on what you’re doing. Wireless networks are not totally secure. People can use that opportunity to capture your personal information and sabotage whatever transaction you’re making. No online banking emergency is so urgent that you need to make yourself that vulnerable.

6. DON’T be a loyalist: In other words, don’t become so enamored with your bank, or so lazily accustomed to it, that you continue to bank there without consciousness of how comparatively good or bad a deal you are getting. If you’ve consistently borrowed money from the same bank, maybe it’s time to start exploring your other options. Even if you shopped around long and hard to find this bank, time passes, deals change. It’s worth reevaluating every now and again your decision on where to bank. And it’s particularly easy to do this type of research online.

7. DON’T be a stranger: Establish a relationship with your bank and the people who work there. The best way to get the best possible deals from a bank is to let them get to know you. Set up a meeting with the manager of your local branch, just to introduce yourself and key them in to your financial goals. You may never actually need their assistance beyond the norm, but if you do – if a problem arises, an error or a financial emergency – you’ll benefit greatly from having already established a rapport with the folks whom you’re asking for help.

8. DON’T be afraid to ask: Banks are in the business of keeping their clients. This sometimes means they will go above and beyond their normal service offerings to keep your business. Whether you are looking for a more favorable rate on one of your accounts, free financial software, or even a toaster, don’t be afraid to ask about specials. In the process don’t forget to remind them how loyal a customer you have been. You’d be surprised how many promotion items that are available to you, but are not given to you. It’s just taking up space in your bank’s storage room.

In summary, taking care with your banking habits, being protective of your banking information, and remaining aware of how the deal you’re getting compares with other deals available to you will help prevent you from making many of the most common and detrimental mistakes in personal banking.

The History of Prom Night!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

The proms of today are very elaborate and exciting affairs, and ones that are talked about and prepared for by students long before the actual event. The prom has become a who s who of high school society and as the dance approaches the pressure is on to find a suitable prom partner, and preferably someone that can give you a helping hand to the coveted title of prom king or queen.

Proms weren t always the exciting frenzy of posh outfits, stunning hairstyles, stretch limos and hot dates as they are today. In fact, during the early part of the twentieth century, the dance was a small-time, simple affair with little in the way of organization or preparation.

As the decades passed and different types of music exploded on to the scenes, high school proms began to become more and more elaborate. Live bands and huge halls were hired for the event, and students began to take more of an interest in the dance, how they looked at the dance and who they took with them to the dance! High schools began to add to the excitement of the prom by introducing the idea of the prom king and queen, a title that all the most popular couples vied for year after year.

With each decade came a new type of band, changing fashions and increasing excitement, which has culminated in the high school prom that we know today. What started many moons ago as a stiff, very polite and downsized affair has turned into the most exciting event of the year for most students.

The Modern Prom

The high school prom of today is a flurry of excitement and preparation, where the stores stock up with elaborate gowns and tuxedos, the limo companies prepare for a massive influx of bookings and the students fret about everything from how they should wear their hair to how they should ask their dream date to the dance.

For many schools, the live bands have been replaced by sizzling DJs with a range of the latest tunes to get the students on the dance floor, and the atmosphere in the huge halls hired for these dances is usually electric. Once dinner is over, the evening tends to become more and more exciting, with the announcement of the prom king and queen, everyone strutting their stuff on the dance floor, and relationships often moving on to the next level for some couples.

Getting That Unique Look

One of the most exciting yet stressful parts of preparing for this night of all-out excitement is finding the perfect outfit, and this is particularly true for the girls, who now have such a wide choice of dresses and gowns it can be hard to know which way to turn. Every girl at the prom wants to look special and unique, and stepping from the limo and walking in to the crowded room feeling like a princess can be a wonderful feeling. However, it can also be a feeling that lasts for only several seconds as you realize that every other girl in the room has the same dress and hairstyle as you!

After all of your months of preparation, this can be a real downer. However, there is a way to avoid this problem – don t shop at the local mall where practically every other female going to the dance is likely to shop. If everyone shops at the same mall, it is only natural that the same dress will catch at least a few girls eyes. And if the choice is limited, this is even more likely to happen.

So, what s the answer? Don t limit your choice to the few shops at the local mall! Instead, you could have access to fabulous prom dresses from all over the country, which means that you have a pretty good chance of getting a dress that nobody else is going to be wearing! And how can you get access to this wealth of wonderful outfits? By going online.

Mountain Boards or All Terrain Boards, Which One?

Monday, September 29th, 2008

What is ATB?

ATB or Mountain boarding is a fast growing extreme sport easily accessible to most people. Similar to snow boarding but the board has wheels and is used on a wide variety of terrain. A little over £100 will get you equipped and if you have a hill nearby you don’t even need to drive there.

Which board?

The first factor in choosing a board is your height. The board stood on end should come just above the hip. If the board is too long your stance will be too wide and this will cause control and balance difficulties. If the board is too short your feet will be too close together and you will have trouble balancing and the board will feel unstable. You should be stood on the board with feet pointing straight forward and legs comfortably apart, knees slightly bent.

The next consideration is weight. Boards tend to get more expensive as they get lighter due to the technologies and materials used. Basic boards use steel channel trucks, standard wheels/tyres, and plywood decks. These trucks are very stable at speed and they are tuneable with different springs and egg shocks. Skate trucks provide an alternative and are very popular. They are just a larger version of the truck you find on a standard skateboard. The skate truck is not good at speed as you get speed wobble which will throw you off the board, but they are very light and manoeuvrable. The decks tend to be very stiff and will provide a hard landing when jumping.

Decks get more flexible when layers of ply are removed and replaced with layers of GRP, Carbon fibre or Kevlar. This makes the deck lighter and stronger too. This flexibility improves comfort as suspension does on a car.

The next step in deck construction is full composites. This can be solid Carbon fibre or reverse cap over a wood core as used in snowboards. These decks are the most expensive to buy but are far stronger and lighter than the previous versions. The flexibility varies between manufacturers and most riders will stand on several before they decide which one feels right.
With these top end boards come better trucks and wheels. Trucks are usually a variation on the channel truck but are usually Aluminium alloy and some even plastic parts. Some engineering has entered the sport now and there are some fancy trucks using variations of rubber blocks similar to indespension units on car trailers. These can be tuned to each riders preferences and are very tough which is an advantage if you are jumping or riding very rough terrain. Wheels get lighter for these boards as do the tyres, though not always stronger.

Bindings help keep your feet on the board. On basic decks they are a Velcro strap which fastens over the top of your foot and allows the foot to be put in and taken out with ease. This can lead to your foot slipping out while riding, not good! A heel strap improves this by fastening to each side of the binding and passing behind the foot to stop the foot leaving the binding without the heel strap being lifted by hand first. An improvement is the ratchet binding, this is tightened onto the foot via a ratchet system making the foot more secure, it can also be used with heel straps. The top end boards may have the facility to use snowboard style bindings. These can be used with your normal riding boots.

These bindings use ratchets or over centre clips to fasten your foot tightly to the board giving no accidental escape. When you are attached in this way control is enhanced as any movement you make is directly transferred to the board, also if you need to jump the board over an obstacle it has no chance of falling off your feet. If you are not attached to your board via snowboard bindings or heel straps then a leash must be used. This leash attaches to the front binding and then to your lead leg just above the knee. The purpose of this is to prevent the board continuing down the hill in the event of a fall, saves you a walk and the board can’t damage anything or anyone on its way down.

Safety

Before you leave the shop be sure to equipe yourself with a helmet and pads at the very least. Safety equipment does vary as does cost but remember that the ground is harder than you are!

Knowledge

It is better to talk to someone in the know before you spend your money. Either find a local club and chat to the riders or visit a shop that has an experienced person on the staff not just a salesman, some shops, like ours, will have an instructor available to give lessons if required.

This article was written by Alan Greenhill of kitensk8.com kitensk8.com who is a mountain board instructor and has been involved with the sport since early 2003. Kite N Sk8 have board technicians trained by MBS who are the leading mountain board manufacturers and they also have their own team who compete in the UK Championships.

Four Tips When Transferring Credit Card Balances

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Four tips when transferring credit card balances that help to make your credit situation improve. If you carry high balances on your credit cards with high interest rates then you might be a candidate for a balance transfer!

There are several tips that can help you to make a good balance transfer.

Tip 1: Check the teaser rates. Some credit card companies promise a great lower rate if you transfer a balance to their card. At first glance this sounds awesome, until 6 months later when the rate reverts back to a high percentage.

Uh oh…introductory rate is gone! Therefore, verify how long the rate will last.

Tip 2: Pay your monthly payments on time. Other than helping your credit rating, this will help you avoid the dreaded UNIVERSAL DEFAULT CLAUSE. Yes, this clause allows your creditor to change your rate to a higher rate if you are late even one payment on another credit card.

So….pay early or on time but NEVER late!

Tip 3: Watch out for transfer fees. When you transfer the balance be sure that your new creditor won’t charge you a transfer fee. Or…if they do, make sure you understand how much and are agreeable to it.

“What, you charged me $200! Make sure you know about that money before you transfer!”

Tip 4: Tell your current creditor that you are transferring your balances to another creditor if they don’t match the offered interest rate. Give your creditor the opportunity to lower your rate. Ask for it. They just might do it.

“Great, you are lowering my rate! I think I’ll have to stay.”

Try these tips and see how much additional money you might save yourself each month, year and decade!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

So, you want to become an expert “bubbleologist”? These super bubble recipes and homemade bubble wands will make you an expert at creating big, beautiful bubbles. A great activity for kids parties or anytime.

Bubble solutions contain a few simple ingredients which can be found at home or in your local supermarket or pharmacy. You will need liquid dishwashing detergent. The more expensive ones like Joy or Dawn work best. Mix with water then add either light corn syrup or glycerin.

Experiment during your play time to see what works best for you. Weather conditions and other factors also play a role in the success of your bubble-making.

When you have perfected your very own bubble blend, you can add tempera paint or food coloring for more colorful bubbles, if desired. These are best used outside as staining is possible.

7 Secrets for Raising Responsible Teenagers

Monday, September 29th, 2008

There are many ways to raise a child, and every child is different. Therefore, there is no magic formula for raising good teens. Excellent parents can still have problem children, and good children come out of bad homes. But by staying closely involved in your children s lives, even when they don t appear to need you as much anymore, you ll be teaching them the lessons they need to learn to be the successful and happy adults you d like them to be. Here are some pointers for keeping teens on the right track:

1. Love them. Tell your teens that you love them every day. They may be too embarrassed to return those words at this stage in their lives, but it s temporary. Some day, they re going to remember that you always told them you loved them, no matter what. When they do something wrong, emphasize that you still love them, even if you don t love their behavior. Teens tend to overdramatize when they re yelled at and say, “You don t care about me.” Make sure they understand that you can still love someone even if you re not happy with their actions.

2. Don t be afraid to set limits. You don t need to be your teens best friend. If you feel uncomfortable about them going somewhere, put your foot down. Sometimes, they really want an excuse to tell their friends “no,” and what better reason than, “My mom won t let me go!”? Don t be afraid to be the “meanie.” It means you care.

3. Get them involved in something outside themselves. Teenagers benefit greatly from attending religious youth groups or community-based teen groups. These groups often place a strong emphasis on thinking about others while having fun. Mission trips and community service opportunities often become some of the greatest experiences of teens lives and a good lesson in seeing that others have it much worse than they do.

4. Emphasize the importance of family. Kids need an anchor, a sense of belonging to “something.” Stress the fact that your family is a team. And encourage your kids to spend time with their extended family, such as grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins. Eat dinner together several times a week, and talk about your day rather than watching TV.

5. Make them help out. Your kids may tease you by saying that you wanted kids just so you d have household help, but don t let that discourage you from insisting that they participate in taking care of the home. Teens are old enough to do their own laundry, clean their rooms, scrub the bathroom, do the dishes, and anything else that you do. You re doing your kids (and their future spouses) a favor by teaching them how to take care of themselves and a household. Don t back down just because they complain or do a shoddy job. All family members should be required to pitch in. And don t give them allowance for things they should be doing anyway, like keeping their rooms neat. Give them cash for extra jobs, like mowing the lawn, washing the car, etc.

6. Respect their choices. Let s face it: Our kids are never going to be the little clones we d hoped to raise — people who would act and think exactly as we do! Teenagers are constantly trying to figure out who they are and what they believe. Don t criticize their choice of music (unless it s particularly violent), hairstyle, clothing, etc. Take a look at your old high-school pictures, and you ll see that your own children s experimentation is perfectly normal! Yes, they re still kids, but they want to be treated as adults. Exerting total authority over them is bound to backfire. For the things that are temporary, let them have the choice. Blue hair will grow out. (Tattoos, however, won t. Say “no” to them.)

7. Teach them about future consequences. Kids need to know you won t be taking care of them forever. Express the importance of education to enable them to get a good job. Explain to them how their actions today greatly impact the future. They re not likely to be able to have the things they want if they have a criminal record or lack a high-school diploma. Show them how much a car and a house cost. Go over a monthly budget with your children so they see how much money it takes to feed a family, pay the utilities, provide housing and transportation, and so on. Kids tend to take these things for granted. They need to think about how their parents are able to provide these things, and how they ll be able to do the same when they re adults.

Today s world provides many temptations and poor examples for adolescents, but parents are still kids most important teachers. Your teens need you now, more than ever, to be present in their lives. The appropriate balance of love and discipline will allow your teenagers to grow up in an environment where they will blossom into caring and responsible adults.

Getting Your Home Loan Approved

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Finding a home loan with less than stellar credit isn’t an easy task. But, it is possible and it is getting somewhat easier. Consider the following tips to improve your chances of being approved for a home loan:

Tip #1. Find a real estate agent you can trust and enlist his help in identifying properties that will come prepacked with equity based upon their worth and their selling price. Financing a property that has equity built in above and beyond the mortgage is always going to be easier and quicker than a fixer-upper or something that requires you to sink more money in it immediately. After all, to lenders, equity is almost as good as cash down. Have your agent and mortgage brokers help you identify possibilities in this area.

Tip #2. Look outside the boardroom box for more creative options for finding financing. If the seller will carry a second mortgage you may be able to save your down payment in exchange for monthly payments and interest. You may find lenders who will offer 100 percent financing but the interest rate is a big reason to consider saving for six months on your own to save a down payment instead. The amount of interest you save in the final contract will more than pay for itself. Of course, you could just look at refinancing it at a later date to lower the interest rate – assuming that rates continue to go down.

Tip #3. Compare products and pricing strategies between your lenders. They may all seem similar, but look closer, it’s the subtle differences that can make or break your deal.

Tip #4. When applying for your mortgage, consider using an on-line service that supplies your completed application to various lenders. By utilizing an online service your credit only gets hit once, and you can more easily see the results and compare the lenders to see the best deal.

Tip #5. Consider making the effort to improve your credit score. There are so many simple ways that require little time investment it would be silly not to try them. The main thing to do, however, is to check your credit history on line and note any incorrect items. Whether you decide to try and dispute anything trivial, you should ensure that there is nothing on the report that shouldn’t be. If your debt ratio is out of this galaxy, consider ways to consolidate debt. Also, employ some form of financial planning to help control your spending habits tightly enough to ensure that payments are made promptly and on time. An improving pattern of timely payments and a drop off in credit inquiries such as credit cards or car loans, etc. can help your credit seem more stable and loan worthy.

Play And Learn With Educational Jigsaw Puzzles

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Jigsaw puzzles have been entertaining children and adults for centuries. Wooden puzzles were originally created by painting a picture onto a flat piece of wood, then using a jigsaw to cut out the pieces. A man named John Spilsbury is credited with making the first commercial jigsaw puzzle around 1760. His educational puzzles were of maps, and were used to aid in teaching young children geography. As the children put the pieces of the puzzle together, they were able to learn where different countries and regions were. Because of ease of mass production, many modern jigsaw puzzles are made from cardboard. Puzzles for younger children may also be made of brightly colored plastic or foam. These puzzles have larger pieces, which are easier for young hands to manipulate. Simple wooden puzzles, often three dimensional, are also common. These puzzles have large, easy to manipulate pieces and often form animal or human shapes.

Jigsaw puzzles can be great educational tools. For very young children, they help problem solving and motor skills, while teaching them the forms of animals, people, and much more. Puzzles for children were the primary form of jigsaw puzzle until 1900 or so, when the first more complicated puzzles were produced for adults. It is common for adults to glue down a completed jigsaw puzzle to save their work, whereas children are more likely to take it apart so that it can be put back together again. Doing jigsaw puzzled develops several functions of the brain at once. Reasoning, deduction, analysis and logical thought are exercised in the completion of jigsaw puzzles, as well as physical hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. This is the case for all jigsaw puzzles, not just the ones marked “educational.”

Mini Motorcycles

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Mini motorcycles are also known as pocket motorcycles. They have 25 or 50 cc engines and can run at a speed of 20 – 30 miles per hour. They weigh about 50 pounds and stand at a foot and a half high. They can be powered by oil, gas or electric engines and look exactly like a real motorcycle except they are smaller in size. The snazziest models cost thousands of dollars and come from Italy. Cheaper versions are produced in China, and cost from $200 to $500.

Young and old people are attracted to mini motorcycles. They are great for college students and retired seniors to get around town. They are supposed to be used on closed racetracks, private roads or places where three are no public laws prohibiting their use. The less congested the area where a mini motorcycle is driven, the better. There are too many accidents involving mini motorcycles and cars, trucks and vans. The driver doesn’t stand a chance. Accidents occur because larger vehicles don’t see the mini motorcycle because of its low height.

Many people like to use mini motorcycles nowadays as they are cheaper than a normal sized motorcycle, and they are more fuel-efficient. However, if children ride these mini motorcycles, it is advised for them to wear helmets. This is because every year, the main cause of children’s accidents comes from riding these types of vehicles. Both bodily and brain damage occurs when a child falls from a mini motorcycle. This is why there is a rule that a child must be at least 16 years of age to ride a motorized mini motorcycle.
