Spring Guns – The Ultimate Man-Trap

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

In airsoft, a spring gun is one that uses a spring as the means of projecting the ammunition, but this article is not about that type of spring gun. This other type of spring gun has been around for a long time, and is in a sense, a booby trap. A thin line of string or other material is placed in a low area, and when the string is tripped, the gun (usually a shotgun, as other types of weapons may not hit the intruder/enemy) discharges. In olden times, this was a working means of protecting one’s property, and in fact, the use of non-lethal spring guns is permitted in the United States. However, they are not practical, as it is more than likely a visitor with no malicious intention could trip the wire and get hurt.

Most spring guns are used in personal, high-security homes. Along with them, however, are other barriers such as walls or fences. There are (usually) also signs which state spring guns are present. The fact is, spring guns are not used very much anymore, and the ones that exist rarely get tripped.

During an airsoft game, if you have the right materials, you can make your own spring guns. Theoretically, you could make a spring gun from a spring gun, which is kind of ironic if you think about it. Just attach some string between two trees, have it set up so when the string is tripped, the trigger of the gun is pulled. Make sure to tell your team mates about it so they don’t accidentally fall into the trap. Set enough of these up around the perimeter of your base, and anybody who tries to get through will be in for an unpleasant surprise. Or, instead of using a gun as the attack method, incorporate a grenade. That way, you will definitely take out the “tripee”, as well as anyone around him. These kinds of spring guns should only be used in the sport of airsoft; don’t use an airsoft spring gun for home defense (in fact, don’t use any spring gun for home defense, they’re outdated and illegal).

PART 2 -My Experiences Trading Crude Oil- Gasoline- Heating Oil and Natural Gas Futures and Options

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Crude Oil is king of the petroleum futures trading market! Here’s some valuable hints and kinks taken from actual trading experiences.

Weather is an important factor for crude oil futures volatility. Hurricanes and blizzards have had adverse effects on prices. Sell out when the prediction looks the worse. Usually the anticipation of the event is worse than the actual event. Hurricane Katrina was a very rare event and on the extreme of the bell curve. Don’t expect moves like that often. Buying crude futures or options for this event turned out to be one of the best trades of the year.

Many oil products position traders like “seasonal tendency” methods and automatically buy oil options early in the spring believing that the demand will increase due to increased driving. It doesn’t always work out this way as the charts will prove. Sometimes prices decline from spring to summer in crude and unleaded gasoline. Indiscriminate buying of options is a sloppy way to trade although this particular seasonality does exhibit a decent probability. Ultimately, trading like this would result in losses due to the expensive premiums paid to hold options for a long period of time. If you desire to make a trade like this, wait until a price debacle to put on you positions. Don’t buy into a rally that could reverse and kill the premiums in your options. When the options are undervalued they present better opportunities.

For additional clues when forecasting crude, always watch heating oil, unleaded gasoline, and natural gas futures. The crude market does not exist in a vacuum. If any of these other oil/gas markets makes a big move, they will probably impact crude oil also. Sometimes natural gas will trade counter to crude oil futures due to price disparities and a whole range of other factors.

In summary, when the TimeLine signals opportunities in the oil products, we like to use futures with an option protection hedge, or buy an option while selling another to help offset the premium expense. In addition, writing crude options (selling for the premium erosion) is a great method because of the often inflated premiums.

Here’s how I look for opportunities in the petroleum markets: First I generate a TimeLine forecast that shows a strong move up or down in a particular energy market. The TimeLine is based on time cycles and other preprogrammed patterns. I then determine if the move is expected to be choppy, trending, and for how long. This helps us focus on possible directional futures/option positions or writing options in a range, or even writing options with the trend.

Next I use automated option software to search for the best of 1600 strategies based on the expected market move. I compare these option to option combinations against futures to options combinations. At some point I will find a compromise between risk, profit and simplicity in one or two strategies. In hindsight there’s always a best strategy we could have used. Keep this is mind when narrowing down the choices. When finished, we want to have one or two potential trades to work with. We call the selected few, “high probability, low risk trades.”

Remember there is more to planning a trade than just coming up with a forecast. The market may move as predicted but we can still lose by choosing the wrong trading vehicles. Pick the right vehicles and strategies that will allow us to stay in the market without excessive fear, but still carrying calculated risk.

We NEED to take on calculated risk or the market will not pay us for our services. In addition, the vehicle has to move far enough to make a profit without letting the expense of protection eat us up. Excessive protection (risk avoidance) can come in the form of option premiums, too close-in stop loss orders – and overdone, complex spread strategies. Matching a forecast to a strategy is an important skill to succeed in commodity trading.

Good Trading!

There is substantial risk of loss trading futures and options and may not be suitable for all types of investors. Only risk capital should be used.

Do I Need A Swimming Pool Heater?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Whether or not to get a swimming pool heater is an individual decision. However, in general, it is a good idea. Swimming pools have many uses. They are not just for summer fun. Many people like to use it for as much of the year as possible, for exercise, relaxation, or socialization. If you are one of these people, but you live in a climate where the weather can change at the drop of a hat, or you just plain do not like cool water, a heater is a great thing to have.

Once you decide to get a heater, the next decision is what type of heater to purchase. Deciding which pool heater system is best for you will depend on your specific needs, budget and the design of your pool and house.

Solar heaters will usually bring the temperature of a swimming pool up into the eighty degree range. When you have this type of heater, a spell of cold weather can drop the temperature of the pool. A few warm days will soon restore it, though. Solar pool covers are great for recreational pool users who don’t necessarily need to swim in their pool every single day.

A heat pump heater will keep pools heated at a consistent temperature between eighty and ninety degrees. This type of heater is an absolute necessity for anyone who is a serious swimmer. If you are set in a daily, year-round swimming routine then this heater is the choice for you.

Athletes and people who do swimming therapy will benefit greatly from this heater, since eighty to ninety degrees are ideal temperatures for training. A heat pump heater is also a good option if your home is simply not capable of accommodating solar panels for solar heating.

Another type of heater that is available is a gas heater. Gas heaters are more expensive than the other heaters. They are generally great for heating a swimming pool quickly and efficiently when time is an issue. For instance, they are excellent for heating a pool for a party.

Heaters are also wonderful options for pools that are not used often, such as a pool located at someone’s vacation home. Gas heaters are usually extremely large, so they can reach any temperature desired quickly and maintain it constantly, no matter what the weather is like.

If heating a swimming pool is a top priority for you then, in addition to a heater, you may want to invest in a solar pool cover. The solar cover will collect heat from the sun and transfer it to the water. This, in conjunction with your heater, will help to maintain the pool’s temperature.

Considering all of your options should help you to determine if you need a swimming pool heater or not. If you decide that you do then this information should help you to easily determine which heater suits your needs and budget the best.

Community Shopping Centers – Description and Financing

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Community shopping centers generally have less than 200,000 square feet in gross leasable area. They may be designed as enclosed or open-air malls or as strip centers. The centers are organized around one or more of the major national or regional retailers, one or two “junior” department stores, or a store owned by a company specializing in smaller department store operations. A junior department store will generally have between 30,000 and 50,000 square feet and feature a full line of soft goods (clothing, books, and so on) and often some hard goods (appliances, furniture, and so on).

In the 1980s, major national and regional discount department stores emerged as new, significant anchors for community shopping centers. Retailers such as K-Mart (of the S.S. Kresge Corporation) and Wal-Mart became the dominant force in retail sales growth in the United States in the late 1980s. These stores, usually between 75,000 and 125,000 square feet, compete for discount shoppers with merchandise priced below that of the traditional department store. These super-discounters have become the most popular anchors in many new community strip centers because of their heavy advertising, low prices, and excellent locations, which generate shopping traffic.

Community shopping centers generally require trade areas with populations of 100,000 or more. However, these centers are often located in smaller towns that serve as a shopping area for a larger, multi-community area. Besides the anchor stores, the 10 tenants most likely to appear in these centers are:
women’s ready-to-wear shops
restaurants (with liquor service)
fast food/carryout restaurants
beauty salons
family shoe shops
jewelry shops
card and gift shops
restaurants (without liquor service)
women’s specialty clothing shops
banks

In strip centers, the anchor usually has a central location; if there are several anchors, they are separated. It is important to remember that because of the
weather-exposed design of strip centers, shoppers generally walk for shorter distances between stores to shop than is the case in an enclosed mall area. Rents in strip centers will generally run 40 percent to 60 percent less than those found in similar retail areas in enclosed malls. As a rule, sales per square foot will be correspondingly lower than sales in enclosed malls.

Like major department stores, food stores are destination stores. The other tenants depend to some extent on the occasional or impulse sales afforded by a good location in the pedestrian traffic pattern between the larger stores. Like the anchors in large super-regional malls, destination stores in community shopping centers often pay rents that cover only the costs to the center’s owner; the more specialized retailers pay rents that represent true profit potential.

Understand Why Many Kung Fu Practitioners Today Have Knee Problems

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Many Kung Fu students have knee problems later in life. This is not because the Kung Fu is poorly designed, or that Kung Fu should not be trained. This is because many Kung Fu students jump around too much, put too much stress on their knees, and do not use flowing footwork. Using flowing footwork allows a Kung Fu student to move around quickly, but minimize the stress put on their knees.

Training in martial arts and self-defense is important because it allows someone to defend themselves against an attacker. Martial arts are a matter of self-preservation and self-protection. But to be able to defend yourself in a stressful real life self-defense situation you have to train for many hours. Simply knowing the moves will not help in a real self-defense situation because you will be very stressed out and very excited. It is very easy to forget the things you learned in such situations. This is why martial arts students train for so many hours and repeat each move and motion so many times. The goal is for the movements to be committed to muscle memory so that the student can do the moves without having to think about them.

The downside of all of this training is that it can take a toll on a body. This is especially true if the moves are practiced wrong or performed without proper preparation. Kung Fu puts a lot of emphasis on stretching for a reason. While stretching may not be as fun or interesting as lifting weights or practicing strikes it is an important part of training. Many Kung Fu students do not stretch enough and this takes a toll on their body when they train movements over and over for hours.

Kung Fu also places a lot of importance on footwork. Fast footwork is very important to performing moves and defending against attacks. But Kung Fu is not about jumping around or trying to show off. Kung Fu requires flowing footwork that allows for speed and change of direction to be accomplished without putting too much stress on the knees. Your body should give to each step and react like a spring, not a stuff board. This does not just help protect your knees during hours of training, but actually helps you move faster and change direction sooner.

It is possible to learn Kung Fu by yourself, but getting a teacher can be a great way to make sure you are doing the movements correctly and that you will not end up hurting your joints in the long run. Sometimes it takes another set of trained eyes to watch what you are doing and tell if you are doing the correct movements or not. It is a shame when a martial arts student, who is seeking to defend their body and health, ends up hurting their body by training in self-defense incorrectly.

How to Make Money from ATMs

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

With ATM cash machines currently costing anywhere from $3,000 to $30,000, there is no doubt that buying one for your business is costly. If you arrange things right, however, buying an ATM can actually be a very sound investment.

Provided that you primarily manage the machine yourself, ongoing maintenance costs shouldn’t be too high. You’ll have to pay for the electricity to fun the machine, as well as around $40/month for a dedicated phone line, and $50 each time the machine is professionally re-loaded.

There may also be a monthly charge (usually $15 to $25 per month), which is required by some vendors but not others. It is important to take these fees into account when considering different machines and doing price comparison research.

Once you have paid all these little fees, however, it is possible to make money on your ATM by collecting a percentage of the surcharge. The average charge for an ATM transaction is $1.60, and as the owner of the machine, all or a portion of this money will go to you.

Depending on your contract with the ATM vendor, and how much of the maintenance work you do yourself, your share of the money can range from 35% to 100%. There is also the added benefit that customers will never find themselves short of cash when making a purchase at your store.

Therefore, installing an ATM machine not only helps your existing business, but can become a fully sustainable or even profitable business in itself.
