Are You Getting Scared?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Are you getting scared by another potential Chinese stock meltdown? On Tuesday 27th February 2007, Shanghai stock market plunged by 8.8% and it brings the world market with it. Back home, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged more than 400 points while the Nasdaq Composite index weakened by 99 points. It is long overdue. Chinese Exchange Traded Funds such as Xinhua China 25 index (FXI) and Greater China Fund Inc. (GCH) plunged 9.9% and 13.7% respectively. The Chinese market has leaped 130% in 2006 and trading at all time high before the precipitous fall. As an investor, what adjustment should you make in case similar drop occur in the future?

Well, the answer is nothing. If you have been investing in stocks below fair value, the recent drop should make your stock is a more compelling opportunity. Let me revisit what fair value of a common stock is quickly. When interest rate in your local bank is 4% and the 10 year treasury bond yields 5%, your common stock should yield more than that. Some wants 6%, others may want 7% from their common stock yield. In the case of 7% yield from a common stock, the fair value of a common stock under this circumstance is when it reaches a Price Earning ratio of (1/ 7%) = 14.28. This means that for a stock trading at $ 14.28, its profit per share should be at least $ 1.00.

That is fair value in brief. Our job as investors however is to buy stocks that is trading below fair value, not at fair value. Fair value is the point when we sell our investment. Thus, even when other markets are doing bad, your stock is already trading below fair value anyway and other investors may in fact flee to undervalued common stocks when things turn sour.

Therefore, during the market correction, you should watch out for potential investments that you have always want to buy but at a lower price. For example, some potential common stocks for investment that fell include: Novell Inc. (NOVL), Dell Inc. (DELL), Advance Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) or perhaps OmniVision Technologies Inc. (OVTI). You can be sure that stocks with highest Price Earning ratio tends to fall the hardest in a brute sell off.

The moral of the story is don’t get scared. You also need to know the fair value of your common stock before pressing that buy button. Once you have done the proper research, you will be less likely to be panic and sell at an unfortunate time. Oh yes, it does take time. There is no free lunch.

A Few Words on Cricket

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

“But we do not judge a cricketer so much by the runs he gets as by the way he gets them”. In literature as in finance, says Washington Irving, — “much paper and much poverty may co-exist”. And in cricket, too, many runs and much dullness may be associated.

If cricket is menaced with creeping paralysis, it is because it is losing the spirit of joyous adventure and becoming a mere instrument for compiling tables of averages. There are dull, mechanical fellows who turn out runs with as little emotion as a machine turns out pins. There is no color, no enthusiasm, and no character in their play. Cricket is not an adventure to them, it is a business.

It was so with Shrewsbury. His technical perfection was astonishing; but the soul of the game was wanting in him. There was no sunshine in his play, no swift surprise or splendid unselfishness. And without these things, without gaiety, daring and the spirit of sacrifice cricket is a dead thing. Now, the Jam Sahib has the root of the matter in him. His play is as sonny as his face. He is not a miser hoarding up runs, but a millionaire spending them, with a splendid yet judicious prodigality. It is as though his pockets are bursting with runs that he wants to shower with his blessing upon the expectant multitude.

It is not difficult to believe that in his little kingdom of Nawanagar where he has the power of life and death in his hands, he is extremely popular, for it is obvious that his pleasure is in giving pleasure.

Forex Option Brokers

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The word Forex is derived from combining two words – Foreign Exchange. It deals with buying of one currency and selling of the other at the same time. Over $2 trillion in foreign exchange is transacted everyday.

Currency exchange is a new option that has emerged for small investors. Earlier, the market was not easily accessible to small investors. Only banks, multinational companies and large conglomerates engaged in trading. Now, with the help of technology, everyone can derive benefits from this low risk, high return market. A proper understanding of the system is necessary to avoid losses. Brokers help individuals, as well as institutional investors to establish their accounts for currency exchange.

Option trading is a kind of trading wherein a contract allows a person to buy a certain security (whether stocks or currencies) at a particular price at a certain point in time.

There are basic two categories of option brokers. Some brokers offer their services online, while others offer their services over the phone. Some forex brokers offer both options.

The minimum amount required for trading accounts varies amongst forex option brokers. They may also have specific rules about trading contracts of a minimum value. Contract liquidity is also an important factor. Some brokers allow the investor to enter and exit at any time, whereas others may have fixed time periods.

Standard option contracts that are traded over-the-counter (OTC) are generally referred to as Plain Vanilla Forex Option products. They have very good liquidity for major currencies. The brokers who offer this product are known as Plain Vanilla Forex Option Brokers. However, not many option brokers offer plain vanilla forex option online, but do so only over the phone.

Another type of broker is the Exotic Forex Option Broker. By definition, they deal with currencies that are not traded too often. Also, these products are called non-vanilla, as their structure may be quite different from the standard option. They are also not very liquid, and are generally designed to suit individual needs.

There are many different forex option-trading products available. It is very important to understand all the risk factors associated with all of them before choosing a suitable one. The forex option broker helps the investor make the right choice.

Credit Report – Check Yours Regularly – and for Free

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

In the twenty-first century, there are few documents that have a greater impact on the lives of Americans then their credit report. Credit rating determines one’s ability to buy a home, a car, or to obtain a credit card or a job. Since these things are important, it is equally important that the information be accurate. The only way to be sure of that is to check the report regularly. Prior to last fall, there were two ways to obtain a copy of your credit report: to pay for one, or to obtain one for free after being denied credit. Thanks to the Fair Credit Reporting Act passed last year, Americans can now obtain a free copy of their credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies once a year.

Due to anticipated heavy response to the offer of free credit reports, the program has been rolled out in stages. People living in the West and Midwest are already eligible to apply for a copy of their report at www.annualcreditreport.com. As of June 1, 2005, those living in the Southeast are now eligible, and on September 1, 2005, those living in the Northeast will be eligible. All that is required to receive a copy of your credit report is to answer a few simple questions. Since it only takes a few minutes to do, there is really no reason to put off checking your credit report, and you may benefit tremendously by doing so.

The credit score is a single, three digit number that represents an individual’s credit worthiness, and that score is obtained through a complex formula that takes into consideration a person’s borrowing and spending habits and payment history. A high score makes someone more eligible for loans and credit, while a lower score may indicate that a person is a risk to repay. While the information contained on a credit report is generally accurate, incorrect information sometimes shows up on credit reports, and incorrect information could result in someone who being denied a loan for which they might otherwise be qualified. Furthermore, a credit report check is the best way to determine if you have been the victim of identity theft, an increasingly popular crime that often goes unnoticed for a year or more. If your identity is stolen, your credit rating can be ruined and you can be burdened with thousands of dollars in debt. The new bankruptcy law, which goes into effect in October 2005, draws no distinctions between debt incurred by an individual and debt incurred through identity theft. This alone should be reason enough to check your credit report regularly.

Since the law now allows individuals to obtain one free report per agency per year, anyone who wants to keep a close eye on their credit report can obtain a free report as often as every four months. Since the credit report affects your life in so many important ways, checking it regularly should become a habit.

The Basic Details Of The Game Of Chess

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

The Chess Game was invented thousands of years ago and right throughout its history it has become known as the “king” of board games. Such people as Napoleon, Charlie Chaplin, Einstein and Nikola Tesla where renowned for their chess skills.

Not only can the game of chess provide you with hours of pleasure it is great for exercising the intellect and the game is known to be able to improve someone’s analytical thinking their creativity and judgment.

Although during the past Chess was mainly played by those of a high standing such as courtiers etc., today you will find that the game attracts people of all ages and all works of life from around the world. Not only do many people find chess intriguing, but it also gives them a chance to pit their wits and skills against another.

All that anyone requires to be able to play chess is a chessboard and chess pieces, you can even play online if you want (all you need then is a computer). A normal chessboard is 8” x 8” with alternating black and white squares.

There are a total of 32 chess pieces, 16 white and 16 black. One player will play with the white pieces (WHITE player) and their opponent gets the black (BLACK player). The 16 pieces are made up of the King, Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights and 8 Pawns.

At the start of any game the pieces are placed in their initial places as follows:

1. The player places each of his pieces along two rows of the board (ranks) closest to him.

2. The 8 pawns are placed in the front rank with the rest of the pieces placed behind them closest to the player.

3. Starting from the outside of the board and working into the middle the pieces closest to the player should be placed in the following order Rook, Knight, Bishop, Queen, King, Bishop, Knight, Rook. The order they are placed in for the WHITE player is from left to right on the board and for the BLACK player from right to left. Thus you end up with the opponents same piece in each column (file) facing each other on the board.

To help describe the chess positions an “algebraic chess notation” was invented and is easy to learn as it helps the players to identify squares and pieces that are on the board during a game. Below we describe how it works.

When viewing from the WHITE player’s point of view the left most file (column) is known as “A” and the next one “B” and so on until we reach the right most file (column) known as “H”. The rank (row) which is closest to the WHITE player is then called “Rank 1” or the “First Rank” and then comes “Rank 2 (Second Rank)” and so on until we reach the 8th Rank which is the rank (row) closest to the BLACK player’s pieces.

The whole idea of the chess game is to trap your opponents King. Sound’s simple doesn’t it, but this will need to be explained at a later date.

Revitalise Your Mind, Body And Soul In A Place Of Your Choice

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

You always enjoyed holidaying in the Caribbean beaches. Walking on the beaches has been bliss to you. The food, the music and not to forget the culture have mesmerised you. You always thought of making it your second home or to at least celebrate your Christmas vacations there. But this year your son got into college and your budget got into stress. Christmas is approaching and you are getting nostalgic about Caribbean vacations. Don’t worry! You can still find yourself in the beautiful beaches of Caribbean islands with CHEAP HOLIDAY LOANS.

A holiday loan is a loan meant to cover your holiday expenses. It covers all your expenses right from airline bills to your lodging and eating expenses. It comes at an economical rate than your credit cards and most importantly you can repay your holiday expenses within a set period by paying monthly installments. The advantage of cheap holiday loans over credit cards is their low interest rate and repayment period. Unlike credit cards which take you to a vicious cycle of repayments and revolving credits a holiday loan has a fixed repayment period and lower interest.

Due to increase in global tourism many people are choosing foreign destinations for spending holidays. This has made many lenders offer CHEAP HOLIDAY LOANS. The interest rate of such loans depends on various factors like your financial status, your willingness to provide collateral and your credit history. People who are in a position to pledge collateral can get holiday loans at a much lower rate than people who don’t have collateral. Even if you have a bad credit history there are lenders who can consider your case and approve a loan. But they charge a little more interest in such cases.

To get a holiday loan at lowest possible rate of interest borrowers are advised to compare different holiday loan packages from various lenders and bargain hard for lower interest rates. The Internet can come to your rescue if you want to save your time and money. With Internet you can get access to several lenders and bargain with them. Look for as many loan plans as you can and then pick one of them as per your requirement and preference.

Investing Mining Stocks and Warrants

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

The Canadian Dollar is now one of the strongest currencies in the world and there have been many forecasts of parity with the U.S. Dollar and as of today, the Loonie is trading at 90.35 as we write this article.

The first and second charts below shows the strength of the Loonie over the last year and the third chart is of the XAU Gold Index. Observe the long term trends in all of the charts.

For investors around the world how can you best position yourselves to benefit from the rising value of the Canadian Dollar?

If you are like many of us, you are currently participating in the bull market in the commodities sector, specifically, in the precious metals, i.e., gold, silver, copper, zinc, etc. If you are not on board this rally perhaps we can enlighten you to some different ways to benefit not only from the Canadian Dollar but also from your investments.

When an investor purchases shares in the Canadian mining companies you are in essence invested in the Canadian Dollar. With the Canadian dollar increasing relative to your country’s currency, your investment is increasing. As the value of your Canadian investments increases, you win again. Thus, you gain from the increasing in the currency as well as the increase in your investments in the mining shares or perhaps, long-term warrants on the mining shares.

The point is, currently investors are experiencing the best of both worlds and we would expect this trend to continue with normal corrections along the way for at least several more years.

We, as investors ourselves, prefer to defer to the experts, Jim Dines, Doug Casey, Pam & Mary Ann Aden, James Turk and others as to the continued direction and strength of the current bull market.

Perhaps you are a conservative investor and neither you nor your investment advisor are currently aware of the bull market in the commodity sector. We believe that soon, within the next few months or within the year, you, yes, you will be investing in this sector, so the choice is yours, now or later.

Investors have many wonderful opportunities for investments from the gold and silver bullion, ETF’s of gold and silver, mutual funds, mining shares and for those investors looking for additional leverage, long-term warrants on mining shares, some of which do not expire until 2011.

As the experts mentioned above believe, this bull market has strong legs and many years to run, we accordingly suggest investors position themselves and not to worry about the day to day fluctuations of the market.

The important thing for all investors is to recognize the big picture, take a position and enjoy what may be the ride of our lifetime.

Personal Loans: Get All the Freedom You Deserve

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Personal loans provide you the much needed relief in times of financial hardships. Personal loans enable you to acquire funds and use them in any way you want. The lender does not restrict the usage of the loan amount and that gives you the absolute discretion as to the usage of the funds.

You can use personal loans for paying off your marriage expenses, car purchase, home improvement, debt consolidation, holidaying or for any other purpose on the earth. Personal loans can be classified as secured and unsecured personal loans.

Secured personal loans are specially designed to offer the borrowers a maximum of benefits. The only requirement is that the borrower needs to offer his house or any other property as collateral to the money lender. This assures the lender about the repayment and the lender, in turn, offers the borrower many advantages like long repayment period, big loan amount and above all the low rate of interest.

However, while availing

Foote Notes: NFL Observations – November 15, 2005

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Chargers To Electrocute Bills … San Diego is coming off a bye week and is 10-1 ATS vs. teams with a losing record going back to last season. Their next victim ought to be Buffalo ( 9.5) this week at home. Bills coming off 14-3 home win over KC after JP Losman filled in for the injured Kelly Holcomb. But the victory was hardly a thing of beauty as BUF put up just 209 yards total offense and Bills vulnerable 31st ranked rushing defense gave up 150 yards to Larry Johnson and Co. Word has it LaDainian Tomlinson will wear a bib all week in practice to soak in the pounds of drool coming from his mouth as he dreams about facing the Bills beleaguered rush defense.

Breaking Wind At Soldier Field … Chicago might be 6-3 SU (5-3-1 ATS) after their latest non-cover 17-9 win over San Francisco in a game that featured 50 MPH winds and a 108 yard TD return off a field goal attempt by the Bears Nate Vasher at the end of the second quarter. But alarming for Bears backers is that all six of their team’s wins have come against opponents with losing records. CHI 0-2 SU vs. teams with winning records, including a 24-7 walloping at home against Cincinnati in week three. The Bengals loss might foreshadow a bad omen with Carolina (7-2 SU, 5-4 ATS and 3-0 both SU and ATS L3) coming to town this week. Like the Orange Cats, the Panthers boast a terrific offense (4th highest scoring unit in NFL) and Chicago’s 24th scoring unit might not be able to keep up and hang under the small impost ( 2.5 at press).

Road Warriors … Forgive Indianapolis for not covering the monster 17.5-point spread in their latest 31-17 home win over the hapless Texans after their emotional win over the Patriots the week prior. They still remain a perfect 5-0 both SU and ATS on the trail with a road date at Cincy on deck. The Bengals are coming off a bye week but are 0-2 SU and 0-1-1 ATS when playing a team with a winning record. Both teams feature top rated offenses—the Bengals and Colts rank 10th and No.1 in scoring, respectively. And these teams are one and two in the NFL in points allowed with Indy securing the top spot again. The real difference here might be made in the trenches as INDY rank 10th against the run while CIN ranks just 24th in the same category.

Cardinals Make Endangered Species List … Arizona is a horrific 4-16 ATS their last twenty road games and disastrous 1-7 ATS vs. conference opponents after their latest embarrassing 29-21 loss at Detroit. This might spell trouble this week as they head to the Show Me State to take on the Rams. Totals alert: both teams are a combined 13-5 (o/u) this year. With these two teams playing it’s time to cue the Paul Simon music, “Slip Sliding away … Slip, sliding away …”

Bucs Set Up To Walk Plank … Tampa might be ripe for a major letdown this week at Atlanta (-6) after a thrilling 36-35 upset win at home against Washington. Note that road dogs off a home win as an underdog are a back breaking 13-37 ATS the following week when both teams boast winning records. Further note, the Bucs are a miserable 2-10 ATS their last twelve road games. The Falcons should have plenty of extra motivation after a rare home loss, falling to the Packers 33-25 as an 8.5-point favorite. ATL 4-2 ATS after a loss going back to last season.

Oakland Ready to Raid Bookies??? Norv Turner is an incredible 14-3 ATS his last seventeen as a road underdog of 3.5 to 7. So don’t write them off with against Washington (as most likely will) on the trail this Sunday after they were clobbered by Denver 31-17 at home. Raiders also 3-1 ATS away from the Coliseum (or 2-2 ATS depending on line you got when they played Kansas City at Arrowhead) and face a Skins team that has allowed 36-points in two of their last three games. In the other game during this stretch, WAS faced an Eagles team sans Terrell Owens.

49ers No Fools Gold At Home … 4th string QB Cody Picket completed just one measly pass the entire game (!!!) in the 49ers latest 17-9 road loss at Chicago. But 49ers easily covered as a 13-point underdog and are actually 3-2 ATS at home with Seattle (-11.5) coming to town this week. The problem is that Seattle is 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS their last five and keeps avoiding the banana peel most of us have expected them to slip on. In a similar match-up two weeks ago, Seabirds dominated Cardinals 33-19 as 4.5-point road chalk.

Just the Facts Ma’am … Home favorites are now 54-44 ATS on the season while road favorites are also profitable at 21-16 ATS. In sum, favorites overall are a staggering 76-60 ATS. Breaking down this further we find that favorites of -3 or less are a ridiculous 41-23 ATS! Most notably, home favorites of -3 or less check in at 28-17 ATS while road favorites of a field goal or less stand at 12-7 ATS.

Estate Tax – What It Is And How It Is Filed

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) an Estate Tax is a tax that is imposed on your right to transfer your property and belongings after your death. The individual who is in charge of handing and filing an Estate Tax return is often the estate representative. An estate representative can be an family attorney or a family member who was declared the executor of a state in a will. When dealing with an Estate Tax there are number of things that an individual or family must do when preparing to deal with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

There are certain restrictions for estates that are subject to the Estate Tax. Each year tax laws are updated or completely changed; therefore, estate representatives or family members are encouraged to review the new Estate Tax laws. At the current time the majority of estates are not subject to an Estate Tax if they are valued at less than one million fifty thousand dollars. The Estate Tax value is expected to increase up to two million dollars for the 2006 year. In addition to meeting a certain estate value, it is also likely that the majority of properties that are jointly owned will not be taxed if at least one property owner is still living.

An Estate Tax return is due to be submitted to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) nine months after the estate owner passed away. As with regular tax returns it is possible for estate representatives or family members to obtain a deadline extension. If tax is owed on the estate it still needs to be paid before the nine months arrives even if an Estate Tax return deadline was granted. Not paying the estimated amount of estate taxes due can result in late fees or additional penalties.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will determine the amount of Estate Tax owed by taking the fair market value of all property items that were previously owned by the estate owner before he or she passed away. Fair market value takes into account when an item was purchased and exactly how much it is worth today. When all of these items are added up the total is referred to as the Gross Estate. As with traditional tax returns estate taxes are allowed tax credits and tax deductions. When all of these items are computed together the amount of tax owed will be determined.

When an Estate Tax return is being filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) there are a number of other important documents that must be sent along with the return. These items include a copy of a death certificate, copies of property appraisals, copies of litigation documents that may apply to the estate property, and a copy of the deceased’s will. As previously mentioned an Estate Tax return can be filed by a lawyer, an estate representative, or a family member. Individuals can acquire the Form 706: United States Estate (and Generation – Skipping Transfer) Tax Return by contacting the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or by downloading the form online.

Only a small percentage of Americans are required to file for an Estate Tax return; however, that does not mean that taxpayers do not need to known and understand what an Estate Tax is. A taxpayer may not own a high valued property; however, that does not mean that they cannot inherit one or be named an estate representative by a friend or family member who has passed on.
